about

"This epic, sonata form piece is quite simply an etude I composed to get the sounds created in the above collection into a recording session environment.

Implementing overdubbing and straight forward mixing and minimal post-production techniques.

I feel as a sound designer, that it is imperative to arrange time to congregate the sounds in some sort of compositional arrangement. To see if all of the many patches play well together or not. I find that composing one or several of these etudes, offer great practice before arriving into a fast paced studio production situation or live performance.

This is vital if I am arranging or bringing sound design into the realm of another artists universe. You want to have your patches, and especially complex sounds ready to adapt and correlate during the sessions with speed and articulation. Besides, it's fun to create something that invites you to focus on programming and not the music. just allow whatever music comes from the sounds as you introduce them into the fold of what's between the stereo speakers.

All of the sounds on this recording are coming from the MOOG ONE, with the exception of some beats I dropped in mid-section. Hi-hats in the closing section are MOOG ONE.
All FX (Reverbs, stereo delays, Tape Echoes, Phasing, Chorus, & Flanging are all coming from the Moog One and attenuated in real time during performance. No master DAW clock was used, just free-style track-by track stereo passes. A total of 8 stereo tracks were used. During some of the passes I would change sounds to compliment the next section as it rolled along.

All movements within the piece were improvised. The really fun opportunity with the Moog One offers to the composer or songwriter, is that you can have many full sections of songs ready to go at the touch of a button. It's the perfect sketch tool to create deep diving sequences, movements, and sounds as you develop a piece of music, full album or film score project. As much time I spend programming synthesizers and doing sound design, I typically have only a small fraction of time for sessions of my own records. I like to work fast and complete a full project quickly with as little overdubbing as possible. The Moog One has become such an amazing part of my process. It allows me to very quickly and efficiently evoke the sounds that I am hearing in my head or to re-capture the many impressions of natural environments that inspired a certain musical piece in the first place. To be able to have such recall and portability of a room filled with modular synthesizers, I have fallen in love with it. Each day I walk up to the Moog One, inspired and anticipating what possibilities I will soon be discovering. It inspires me to think that this instrument and what it will become over the next decade. This is an instrument I have always dreamed of, now it's here..."
